Church Erases $500,000 Medical Debt For 500 Different Families
A church in Lincoln, Nebraska, raised more than $500,000 to pay off medical bills for local residents, according to a report published Wednesday.
Members of the First-Plymouth Congregational Church apparently started with just $8,000 with the hopes of helping a few neighbors with medical bills. Just over a year later, the congregation raised $520,000 in donations, enough to remove medical bill burdens for 500 households.
“I had no idea it would go so viral,” Rev. Jim Keck, First-Plymouth’s senior pastor told The Lincoln Journal Star. “You wouldn’t think a pastor would do this; I underestimated people’s generosity.”
The Great Awakening Within The Darkness
Fundraising officially concluded on Easter Sunday, 2023. When totaled, it’s believed that some 10,000 people donated to the campaign. Some of the donors were even from outside Nebraska’s state lines!
“Sometimes love has to be expressed in actions. We have had an initiative all year that is just love on the move,” Rev. “And so the church decided that every dime that went into the collection plate all year long, and that ends today – we’ll pass the plate one more time today – that every dime would go to forgive the medical debt of homes right here in central Lincoln.”
