Democratic New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham attempted to suspend the U.S. constitutional right to carry a firearm in Bernalillo County, Friday.

“When New Mexicans are afraid to be in crowds, to take their kids to school, to leave a baseball game — when their very right to exist is threatened by the prospect of violence at every turn — something is very wrong,” Lujan Grisham said in a statement, shared by Fox News. She attempted to make the suspension part of a public health order. But all she did was ignore the underlying issues associated with high rates of violence in her state.

Even some Democrats were outraged by Lujan Grisham’s actions. California Democratic Congressman Ted Lieu called her out on social media, saying “No state in the union can suspend the federal Constitution. Taking Away Citizen Safety While Ignoring The Underlying Issues

Removing the right to carry firearms simply undermines the rights and safety of law-abiding citizens. When someone is killed or injured by gun violence, there is always a human being on the other side (except for in situations related to suicide). Instead of focusing on policing criminals, Lujan Grisham is policing everyone, and it is a type of overreach she does not technically have the power to evoke. Many have already called for Lujan Grisham’s impeachment over the decision.
