Republican New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith introduced legislation Friday that would force a federal investigation into whether a wind energy development is related to the sudden uptick of whale deaths.

Smith claimed that the Biden Administration has ignored calls for the investigation and for a moratorium on offshore wind farm developments until the cause of the uptick is conclusively uncovered, Fox News reported. There have been 18 whale deaths in two months on the East Coast, well above the national average.

“Nine dead whales have washed up on our beaches since early December, and we still have no meaningful answers from Governor Murphy or the Biden Administration on the broader impact of these projects on the marine environment as they rush to build the largest offshore wind farm in the nation,” Smith said in a statement.

His legislation will fully investigate “the level of transparency from federal agencies that greenlighted this aggressive offshore wind development.” The investigation would further determine the degree of scrutiny implemented when reviewing the potential environmental impacts of the project.

The Biden Administration is failing to protect marine life by refusing to engage in Smith’s calls for support.
