School To Pay $80,000 For Silencing Christians
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) reached a settlement with a former student after she sued the school for discriminating against her Christian beliefs, CBN News reported.
The settlement of $80,000 was announced by Alliance Defending Freedom, who sued the university on behalf of former student Maggie DeJong. DeJong claimed that university officials violated her constitutional and civil rights after students reported her values on censorship, religion, politics, critical race theory, COVID-19 regulations, and politics — all of which are informed by her Christian faith.
In February 2022, officials issued an order against DeJong. stopping her from having any contact with the students who reported her. A judge ruled in March that, “DeJong clearly has the right, as enshrined in the First Amendment, to express her religious, political, and social views on her personal social media account and to engage in mutual conversations with fellow students regarding those opinions without fear of retaliation from school officials.”

SIUE is also revising their policies and student handbook to ensure that there is no repeat behavior against students who express their opinions peacefully. “As a result of Maggie’s courage in filing suit, SIUE has agreed to take critical steps to comply with the law and the U.S. Constitution and move closer to accepting and embracing true diversity of thought and speech,” ADF counsel Mathew Hoffman said of the ruling.
