Why Is Mitch McConnell Lying About Government Shutdowns?
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday that a government shutdown would be “a loser for Republicans.”
“We’re waiting to see what the House is going to do on a continuing resolution. I think all of you know I’m not a fan of government shutdowns, I’ve seen a few of them over the years, they never have produced a policy change and they’ve always been a loser for Republicans, politically,” McConnell said at a press conference, according to The Hill.
In 2013, the government shut down from October 1 to October 16. A year later, Republicans won nine Senate seats, the largest gain of any party since the 1980 elections. Republicans also won 13 seats in the House, the largest majority they gained since 1928!
The Wins Helped Build McConnell’s Career
A year after the historical wins from the Republican party, McConnell cemented his career as the Senate Leader. So, why is he saying the next potential shut down could be a loss?
We don’t know. But McConnell thinks its “incredibly important” to avoid a government shutdown at the end of September 2023. (LEARN MORE: Dr. Ben Carson Details How Communism Has Won US Politics)
