The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) and two faith-based pregnancy centers in Vermont filed a federal lawsuit against state officials for alleged restriction of free speech and their services, CBN reported Thursday.

The suit comes after Vermont’s Democratic legislature signed a measure into law that allegedly “censors the centers’ ability to advertise their free services,” the suit reads. The law also stops the centers  from providing clients with any and all information related to their pregnancies, as well as counseling clients throughout their journey, should the centers not have full medical staff.

“Women who become unexpectedly pregnant should be empowered with life-affirming options, emotional support, and practical resources,” Alliance Defending Freedom’s legal counsel, who are representing NIFLA, said in a press release. “Vermont’s law, however, does the opposite—it impedes women’s ability to receive critical services during a difficult time in their lives and suppresses the free-speech rights of faith-based pregnancy centers,” Payne added. “Pregnancy centers should be free to serve women and offer the support they need without fear of unjust government punishment.”
