All Republican candidates for president will have to pledge their loyalty to whomever becomes the nominee so as to be part of the March 19, 2024 primary, Politico reported Wednesday.
The news means that former President Donald Trump and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis will both have to agree to not run against each other as independent or third-party candidates, and also “endorse” whomever is chosen to head the party. “We were trying to be consistent with what the debate was requiring,” Republican Party of Florida vice chair Evan Power said of the change.
“I don’t think this will come as a surprise.”
While DeSantis has said that he will “respect the outcome of the [primary] process,” others are concerned that the change is only aimed at Trump.
