Republican Florida Gov. and 2024 GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis told “Fox and Friends” that the U.S. is “careering toward bankruptcy,” during an interview Monday.

DeSantis’s statements come as President Joe Biden and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reach an agreement to raise the debt ceiling, according to the Epoch Times. During his interview on Fox, DeSantis said that “prior to this deal, our country was careering toward bankruptcy. And after this deal, our country will still be careening towards bankruptcy.”

He called the decision to raise the debt ceiling by $4 trillion over the next 18 months is just another extension of reckless COVID-19 era spending, and it “totally inadequate” to put the national budget in a better, more sustainable position. “They do these cycles to just get them through the next election,” DeSantis continued. “And that’s ultimately one of the reasons why they continue to fail.”

DeSantis’ disdain was echoed by Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul, who called out “fake conservatives” who agreed to the “fake spending cuts,” the outlet continued. Others have referred to the deal as the “ultimate kick-the-can-down-the-road agreement” and “an insult to the American people … that continues to put our country’s financial future at risk.”
