Abortion Lies Told During Fox News Debate
An article published Friday by the Washington Stand discussed the three main lies told within and around the Republican Primary Debate.
The first lie noted by the outlet was “abortion is a losing issue.” This particular lie was told by Fox News host and moderator Martha MacCallum. “Abortion has been a losing issue for Republicans since the Dobbs decision,” she said, noting a six state referendums on abortion.
But MacCallum didn’t bother to bring up the 25 states that have enacted pro-life legislation since the decision. She also ignored the fact that ever Governor who supports life has maintained their seat, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Georgia’s Gov. Brian Kemp.
States And Timing
DeSantis proclaimed his pride for signing the Heartbeat Bill, which ends access to abortions at the six week point. He decried access to abortion until the point of birth, to which former White House press sec. Jen Psaki said on Twitter, “no one supports abortion up until birth.”
But Psaki is either mistaken or lying on purpose. Alaska, Colorado, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, and Vermont currently allow abortions until the point of birth. And ten other states allow it under a “health exception.” These include: Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Washington.
The candidates were also asked about a national abortion ban. While responses were certainly divided. “Abortion is a states’ rights issue,” is the simplest way to describe the response by some. By former Vice President Mike Pence said, “It’s not a states-only issue. It’s a moral issue.”
