Your Devices Will Send Out An Alarm Wednesday At 2:20pm EST

An emergency alert test is set to take place between 2:20pm and 2:50pm, Wednesday, across America.

The alarm will say: “This is a test of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” The test is being carried out by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). There is a back-up test date of October 11, 2023.

Why?

The purpose of the test is to assess the capabilities of the national Emergency Alert System (EAS) and the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). The WEA will hit all consumer cell phones and will be the third national test of its type. The EAS portion is aimed at televisions and raidos, and will be the seventh of its kind.

“FEMA and the FCC are coordinating with EAS participants, wireless providers, emergency managers and other stakeholders in preparation for this national test to minimize confusion and maximize the public safety value of the test.” FEMA wrote on their website. “The purpose of the test is to ensure that the systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level. In case the Oct. 4 test is postponed, due to widespread severe weather or other significant events, the back-up testing date is Oct. 11.”
