West Point Sued By Students For Fair Admissions

Students for Fair Admissions sued the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Tuesday, over race-conscious admissions.

Axios reported that the group, a conservative nonprofit, sued the school on the basis that military academies should also be barred from race-conscious admissions. Students for Fair Admissions was a significant contributor to the Supreme Court’s decision to end affirmative action. But the court’s decision allowed an exception for military academies.

The group is challenging West Point’s “racial-balancing goals,” the outlet continued. “West Point sets benchmarks for the percentage of each class that should be filled by ‘African Americans,’ ‘Hispanics,’ and ‘Asians,’ and it meticulously tracks its compliance with those figures,” the complaint reads. “These racial benchmarks vary by year, based on the ever-shifting demographics of the enlisted ranks.”

Bigger Picture

“West Point has no justification for using race-based admissions. Those admissions are unconstitutional for all other public institutions of higher education,” the group continued. “The Academy is not exempt from the Constitution…Because West Point discriminates on the basis of race, its admission policy should be declared unlawful and enjoined.”
