A study from the Hartford Institute for Religion Research at Hartford International University found that churches are struggling to attract young people to their pews in COVID-19, according to the Christian Post.

“It is always helpful when a new study or survey paints a consistent picture that points in a clear and unambiguous direction. However, such is not the character of the times we are living in currently. Much of society is still unsettled and remains in flux,” Sociology and religion and director of the Institute for Religious Research, Scott Thumma, said of the study. “This varying reality is evident in the results of this survey.”

“Uncertainty and unsettledness” following the COVID-19 pandemic is rife. It’s almost like we’re waiting for something to happen between now and the 2024 presidential election that will upend our lives again.

Slight and Severe Declines

Only one-third of respondents to the study said their congregations have grown since the pandemic started in 2020. More than half said attendance either dropped slightly or severely.

“This finding raises the question of what impact the pandemic has had on congregational growth and decline trajectories. While the pattern of decline isn’t dramatic at this point, neither is the pandemic impact over,” the study states. “Congregations remain optimistic about their future, but it is also apparent they are continuing to wrestle with the troubling conditions that were in existence long before COVID-19 arrived.” (LEARN MORE: Actor Dennis Quaid Credits God For Helping Him Through Addiction)

The biggest issue is getting young people involved in faith. While there’s been an upwelling in young people turning to Christ, this isn’t expressed in church attendance, according to the study.
