Researchers found that one in 35 health care workers at a Swiss medical institution had signs of heart injuries associated with Moderna’s mRNA-1273 vaccine, according to a study published in July.

The research was focused on a booster vaccination dose. “mRNA-1273 booster vaccination-associated elevation of markers of myocardial injury occurred in about one out of 35 persons (2.8%), a greater incidence than estimated in meta-analyses of hospitalized cases with myocarditis (estimated incidence 0.0035%) after the second vaccination,” the researchers wrote.

In a healthy population, the number should be roughly 1%. The study group were followed for 30 days post-vaccination, so the research does not contain any long-term data.

Can The Damage Be Undone?

None of the patients involved in the study had any major adverse reactions in the 30 days following the booster. But they were also advised to avoid strenuous exercise, which could have mitigated any serious problems, the researchers noted.
