Democratic Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot didn’t just lose her 2023 reelection bid. She came in third in the primary vote for the position, The Associated Press reported Wednesday. She is first Chicago mayor to lose a reelection bid since 1983.

The primary will now be battled out between Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas and Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson, both Democrats. “Lori has had her chance. Since Lori Lightfoot has been in office, it seems like crime has gotten worse,” one Chicago resident told The AP.

Under Lightfoot’s leadership, Chicago’s crime rates have certainly fluctuated but been consistently high. She was described as “a divisive, overly contentious leader,” according to The AP. Public safety and the lack of proper criminal policing is one of the leading issues on the minds of American voters.
