An article published by NBC News detailed how progressives are losing their minds in Woodland Park, Colorado, where a group of conservative candidates won control of the school board.

The article focuses on the legally-elected school board’s decision to adopt the American Birthright social studies standard, saying it was created by a right-wing advocacy group. NBC does not name the group or appear to link to the curriculum anywhere in the article, so we found it online.

The American Birthright social studies curriculum appears to have been developed by a group called The Civics Alliance. A majority of the subject matter focuses on the American right to freedom.

Focused On Mental Health

A large portion of the article written by NBC described how parents, teachers, and others associated with the school board are more focused on mental health provisions by the schools. During a school board meeting in April “the hot topic that evening was students’ mental health.”

The board proposed a resolution in opposition of a bill in Colorado legislature that would offer annual mental health screenings of students in sixth grade and above, NBC described. Many gave heartfelt reasons as to why the local government should be funding and taking care of the mental health of children.

“This is a very important step,” Rusterholtz said of the decision. “This is one more standing in the way of big government taking charge of your children.”
