West Virginia Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin said Thursday that he is  “thinking seriously” about bailing on the Democratic Party, and becoming an Independent, according to Axios.

I have to have peace of mind, basically. The brand has become so bad. The D brand and R brand … You’ve heard me say a million times, I am not a Washington Democrat,” Manchin told a radio host in West Virginia. While he hasn’t made any firm decisions, they appear to be on the horizon.

Despite Manchin taking significant time to distance himself from D.C. Democrats under President Joe Biden, he also has to win reelection in his home state. West Virginia was overwhelmingly pro-Trump. Manchin is up against Republican Gov. Jim Justice in the fight for the primary seat.

Manchin headlined a New Hampshire town hall in July, hosted by a centrist group that is potentially going to run a third party candidate for president in 2024. For now, Manchin hasn’t made any decisions. But we’ll be sure to let you know when he does!
