Football coach at Washington State’s Bremerton High School, Joseph Kennedy, resigned just one game after being reinstated following a lengthy legal battle over his right to prayer.

Kennedy was suspended in 2015 and terminated from his position for kneeling in prayer on the field after every game, The Christian Post explained. After a seven-year legal battle, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in his favor. He was reinstated to his position, which he chose to hold for just one game.

“I believe I can best continue to advocate for constitutional freedom and religious liberty by working from outside the school system, so that is what I will do,” Kennedy said as he announced his resignation. “I will continue to work to help people understand and embrace the historic ruling at the heart of our case. As a result of our case, we all have more freedom, not less. That should be celebrated and not disrespected.”

Why He’s Leaving

Along with wanting to take care of an ailing family member, Kennedy’s resignation came with a message for all Americans. He believed it was in everyone’s best interest that he resign. First Liberty Institute is currently investigating reports of retaliation against Kennedy for his suit.

“As I have demonstrated, we must make a stand for what we believe in. In my case, I made a
stand to take a knee. I encourage all Americans to make their own stand for freedom and our
right to express our faith as we see fit. I appreciate the people of Bremerton, the coaches, staff
and especially the students and wish them all well. Bremerton will always be home,” he noted.
