House Republicans voted to overturn a Washington D.C. law that would have allowed non U.S. citizens the right to vote in municipal elections, including illegal immigrants and potentially foreign spies, according to the Federalist.

Republicans overturned the decision Thursday, and have been praised for their efforts and success in protecting American election integrity. “I applaud the House for acting to ensure that foreign spies and illegal immigrants are not voting in the nation’s capital,” Director of Honest Elections Project Action (HEPA) said in a statement following the decision. “Thanks to a Constitutional right and since the District is not a state, the House acted as it should have and has moved to stop this extreme and antidemocratic measure.”

Some 42 Democrats joined their Republican counterparts, bringing the total tally to 260-173 to overturn, suggesting that protecting American elections is growing into a broader issue than many in the press would have us believe. For the law to be overturned fully, the Senate must also vote similarly to the House, and then the President must sign to ensure that our elections are protected.

President Joe Biden has previously stated that he opposes the law, which would allow at least 50,000 noncitizens to cast a ballot in the nation’s capital. Almost half of these people (21,000) are illegal residents in the municipality.

It’s easy to pass laws, it’s hard to get rid of them.
