“Rejoice with those who rejoice [sharing others’ joy], and weep with those who weep [sharing others’ grief]. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty (snobbish, high-minded, exclusive), but readily adjust yourself to [people, things], and give yourselves to humble tasks. Never overestimate yourself or be wise in your own conceits.”  Romans 12:15-16 AMPC
Will you read that again?  Slowly.  And ask Father God to speak anything He wants to you?

Share their grief

My heart has been filled with heaviness over many recent events in our nation. Broken and hurting people surround us. As Christ-followers, this verse urges us to weep with those who weep and share their grief. It doesn’t need to be our grief. Jesus came to us in the midst of our grief, and we follow Him to do the same for others.
Can we truly listen with compassion, even when we, also, are hurt? Can we see someone is lost or lashing out, even if we can’t agree?
On the cross – in a pain I can’t relate to – we hear our Teacher cry, “My Father, why have You forsaken Me?” (Mark 15:34). When we weep, grieve, or are in pain, we don’t usually think the same as we do when things are peaceful and joyful.  Maybe some of the division in our nation can find its roots in this fallen world’s massive personal pain at war?

Live in harmony

It is not a mistake that immediately after weeping with those who weep, we are told to “live in harmony with one another” and not be haughty or exclusive, but instead, adjust ourselves to people and give ourselves to humble tasks.
What can we do to live in harmony with those around us?
Have we been haughty or exclusive in our thoughts, words, or actions? In our social media posts?
What humble task can we do today to help those who weep?

Reach out with the love of Christ for their healing

“As Jesus and the disciples left the town of Jericho, a large crowd followed behind. Two blind men were sitting beside the road. When they heard that Jesus was coming that way, they began shouting, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!’ ‘Be quiet!’ the crowd yelled at them. But they only shouted louder, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!’ When Jesus heard them, he stopped and called, ‘What do you want Me to do for you?’ Jesus felt sorry for them and touched their eyes. Instantly they could see! Then they followed Him.” Matthew‬ ‭20:29-32, 34‬ ‭NLT‬‬
God spoke to me during my quiet time… When the crowds are getting rowdy, Jesus still heard the heartfelt request of those who were hurting… those seeking Him and needing His healing! In this same way, we want to discern those who hurt and not just weep with them, but reach out with the love of Christ for their healing.
Just as the “crowd” yelled at them to be quiet, voices will come to us from both extremes telling us to be quiet; but Jesus doesn’t follow crowds. He heard their cry and restored their eyesight instantly.
Master, we want our eyes opened to see as You see and to do as You do!
