The soul of America is embattled. Morality and truth have lost their sacred status, no longer regarded as necessary components of our free society. God is largely excluded from the public square and often disregarded by many in power (if not treated with utter contempt). The deterioration has been slow and gradual, leaving many Christians desensitized to its dire consequences.  We now find ourselves living in a time, just as the Bible prophesied, when our culture and our policy makers “call good evil and evil good” (Isaiah 5:20).

An unknown author once profoundly described the degradation of societies as follows:

“First we overlook evil. Then we permit evil. Then we legalize evil. Then we promote evil. Then we celebrate evil. Then we persecute those who still call it evil.”

Where does America fall on this spectrum?

In order to gain an understanding of where our nation falls on the spectrum, one needs to only observe the positions of our elected officials.  Our leaders and politicians are in a fierce battle over whether there should be any barriers at all to abortion, including the killing of a live fetus midway through the process of being born (partial-birth abortion) or whether the Hyde Amendment (which prohibits taxpayer funding of abortion) should be repealed. They are taking opposing positions on whether gender is based on biological science versus personal preference, and whether there are associated legal rights attached to that subjective and elusive standard, including the right to use facilities based on perceived gender.

Where do we, as Christians, stand? Do we find ourselves and our churches somewhere on this spectrum?

God calls on us to stand firm against attempts to redefine good and evil. Romans 14:16 says, “Do not allow what you consider good to be spoken of as evil.” As Christians, we have an obligation to defend the truth and shine Christ’s light in a lost and confused and suffering world.

“For I have a great sense of obligation to people in both the civilized world and the rest of the world, to the educated and uneducated alike…to preach the Good News.”   Romans 1:14

Let us encourage one another to stand firm and allow ourselves to be the messengers of the healing, the redemption, and the salvation that is only available through Christ, so we (His Church and our nation) can be put back together in wholeness.

“Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, until He comes and showers righteousness on you.” Hosea 10:12

“If my people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

Let us humble ourselves, pray together, seek God, turn from our sin, and ask for God’s healing. Our lives, our churches, and our very nation depend on it.
