Members of the World Health Organization have been forced to abandon plans to research the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic. Though the news has been widely reported by media outlets, an article published by Nature claimed that “ongoing challenges” with China have made it impossible to conduct essential research.

Understanding the origins of COVID-19 are essential to preventing future outbreaks of COVID-19 and similar viruses. But without China’s cooperation in narrowing down the exact source, there is little WHO can do to gather any of this data and learn how to mitigate another pandemic.

One prior report by WHO, researched and written in 2021, suggested four possible source scenarios for where COVID-19 came from. The report was considered the first of two phases to identify what happened in China that caused the global pandemic. “There is no phase two,” a WHO epidemiologist told Nature. “The politics across the world of this really hampered progress on understanding the origins.”
