The supreme court affirms the right to prayer in school setting based on six conservative justices of the Supreme Court in which ruled in June 2022 that a football coach has the right to offer a prayer after a game.

Football coach Joseph Kennedy was fired from his position after he chose to kneel at midfield after games to offer a quiet, personal prayer, according to the landmark Kennedy v. Bremerton case. Kennedy sued the Bremerton School District in federal court, claiming the jurisdiction violated his First Amendment right to Free Speech and Free Exercise, as well as moving for a preliminary injunction that would require the district to reinstate him into his position.

This is far from the first time a Supreme Court justice has helped bring prayer back to schools.

Another landmark case hit in 2022, Carson v. Makin, wherein the Court ruled 6-3 that states could not cut public funding from private religious schools just because of their religion. (LEARN MORE: The Separation Of Church And State)

The win for schools and prayer came some 22-years after Justice Clarence Thomas argued that excluding religious schools from governmental programs because of their religious status qualified as “bigotry,” the Atlantic noted.
