Feeling Depressed, America? Pray, Be Kind, Eat Right, And Get Outside

A detailed article from The Federalist published on May 18 broke down how depressed Americans have been fed a lie by Big Pharma over the efficacy of antidepressants, what is causing our misery, and the best ways to fight back.

The article cited a recent Gallup poll that found nearly 1 in 3 U.S. adults report a depression diagnosis at least once in life. “Both rates are the highest recorded by Gallup since it began measuring depression using the current form of data collection in 2015,” Gallup reported.

What is causing our depression?

A 10% increase in depression in the last eight years is a drastic rise. At the same time, Americans took more antidepressants than ever before.

It turns out that most antidepressants have almost no impact on the user. The findings of a study published in 2022 revealed the shocking placebo effect, leading many psychologists to abandon the belief that depression is caused by a physical chemical imbalance in the individual patient.

With back-to-back stress inducing events in the last decade, it’s no surprise that Americans are feeling more beaten up than ever. The Gallup results were likely greatly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns and other more recent factors too.

What is the cure to our depression?

The first thing we have to do is get off our phones. “One hour of daily screen time is correlated with lower psychological well-being in minors aged 2 to 17,” the Federalist noted. We are also “wired to be outside,” the outlet continued, citing a plethora of studies.

“We have, as Western populations, become very disconnected from the natural world,” the study author told the Washington Post. Our food is also totally disconnected from the natural world. And eating processed food of any kind can lead to the development of depressive symptoms.

Kindness and Prayer

“Social connection is one of the ingredients of life most strongly associated with well-being. Performing acts of kindness seems to be one of the best ways to promote those connections,” the co-author of a study from Ohio State University noted. The study found that simple acts of kindness can greatly relieve depression.

Finally, and most importantly, spirituality and religion can create a psychological armor around individuals — physically — protecting them from depression.

“The same researcher found three years earlier that among adults who reported placing a high importance on religion or spirituality, 76 percent were less likely to suffer from a major depressive episode,” the outlet concluded.
