Strength Serves

“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”

This maxim, sometimes attributed to Winston Churchill, affirms that every battle has a strong mental component. We have seen reports of people standing at their windows and on their balconies in cities across Europe to applaud doctors and nurses on their way to work each night.

As we head towards month of May, and the COVID-19 crisis escalates, stories are unfolding of the selfless heroism of Americans protecting and serving us on the front lines of this crisis—from the President and his dedicated team, to the doctors and nurses toiling at critical bedsides, the peace officers protecting our streets, the workers producing medical gear in record time, the truckers who are delivering those goods, men and women staying up all night to stock empty grocery shelves, and many others.

Swelling Support

There is a ground-swell of support for these people, and many are looking for ways to express their support and appreciation. One idea is for Americans all over the nation to tie red, white and blue ribbons on trees, and to display flags, to communicate a message of encouragement and solidarity to those protecting us on the front lines.

A message that says “we are proud of you, and are praying for you and for our country.”

As Christians, we can lead the way in this display of unity and patriotism.

5 Things You Can Do:

1. Pray without ceasing.
Pray for our country, the President and his team, our health care workers, all those working in essential services, your pastor, your neighbors, and anyone else God brings to your heart and mind.

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances…”
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

2. Do your part.
Whether you have been called to stay home, or to stock empty grocery shelves, or to work extra shifts at the hospital, work at it with all your heart without complaining.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men…”
Colossians 3:23

3. Be a good steward.
Provide for your family, but do not hoard. Give generously and serve those God has placed around you. Look after the poor and the elderly.

“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due…”
Proverbs 3:27

4. Be a faithful witness.
This time of crisis has opened people’s hearts and minds to spiritual things. Be the salt and light Christ has called you to be.

“…always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you to for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”
1 Peter 3:15

5. Remember our hope.
Demonstrate your faith by your calm demeanor and steady actions.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”
Romans 15:13 ESV

During difficult times in America believers consistently look to the Almighty for direction. We were designed to meet challenging times with actionable consequences by reaching out to people who are in need.

Let us continue to draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in times of need.
Hebrews 4:16
